#22: CHRIS MONCADA General Manager - eOne Music Canada and Last Gang Records
This episode I had the pleasure of speaking with Chris Moncada, General Manager at both eOne Music Canada, who house such artists as Ghostface Killah, Snoop Dogg (or is it Lion now?), Matt Andersen, who has one of my favourite voices of all time; and he also is the General Manager at Last Gang Records. A few of their artists include The Arkells, Lights and Metric.
As he has a heavy background in marketing, we get in to what exactly a marketing manager does at a label, how it has changed today as opposed to back in the “good old days”, and we also briefly touch base just on the process an artist takes through a record label, from having the music ready, through planning and launching to market.
We discuss a variety of reasons why it’s so important to think globally nowadays rather than just within Canada, as well as the importance of thinking long term. Also, of course, as I do in all of the episodes, I get his insight into what he feels it takes to be effective and successful in his role, general manager of a label.
As you’ll hear, he has a very impressive list of mentors, who he has taken cues from to help develop and build his career to where it is today.
Before we get started, a big shout-out to Long & McQuade, the store that I have personally bought and rented pretty much all of my equipment and instruments from over the years. The staff are friendly and always knowledgeable, and now, another reason to love them even more: They are providing the mics for our interviews! Check 'em out, they’ve got a bunch of locations all over!
Okay, now, at the risk of sounding like a rap song, Chris truly did start from the bottom and now he’s here. From the mailroom at Universal Music to now general manager at Last Gang Records and eOne Music Canada: Chris Moncada. Enjoy!
