#20 Pt.1 MICHAEL PERLMUTTER on Music Supervision in T.V. and Film

PART 1

The One Sheet music business career advice with: Michael Perlmutter; Music Supervisor

The One Sheet is back from vacation and ready with a brand new episode for you all.

This time, we’re delving into the world of music supervision.

Do you ever hear an really amazing soundtrack for a film or TV show and wonder how they decided on the songs? Or, if you’re a musician, are you wondering how to get YOUR song on that film or TV show? Well Michael is the man to talk to!

One series that he supervises all of the music for is Degrassi. In fact, he didn’t know me at the time, but he licensed one of my songs for the show back in the day!

Whether working with a producer to choose a whole show or film soundtrack, to being on set making sure a karaoke scene is being sung properly, it’s a much more complex job than I thought! And it’s more and more interesting, the more and more I learn!

If you’re looking for something that still has elements of business but also is hands-on and involves creativity, this could be a job for you.

We’re breaking this into two episodes. Today, we’re releasing part one.

In this initial part, we focus on what his role entails and how he got into it; we briefly touch on how licensing fees and royalties work for artists, as well as how music supervisors get paid; we bond over both taking psychology in school, the convenience store Macs, back when it was called Beckers (remember Beckers?) and both coming in to the music industry a bit later in our lives than most.

He gives some insight in to how he has moved around from job to job and we talk about how no matter how diverse your background, it’s all cumulative, so a jump in career roles may not be as out of the question as some people might think.

We hear how he initially finds the music that he places, as well as what his preferred method of receiving songs from artists is (note: he’ll listen to every song that is sent his way!), and how they work within a wide range of budgets to always make a great soundtrack.

On top of it being a fun job, it’s also rewarding. He’s in the position to potentially boost artists’ careers way up into the spotlight. As some people say, music supervision is the new A&R.

So here we go! Part 1 of my conversation with Michael Perlmutter, Music Supervisor and owner of Instinct Entertainment.
