#18: Noah Mintz - Mastering Engineer & Owner of Lacquer Channel Mastering Studio
Welcome back to another episode of The One Sheet, a music industry podcast where each episode we sit down with a music industry expert to get tips, insight and advice for the upcoming generation and rockstars of tomorrow. This episode we talk about the art (or, what seems to sadly be the dying art) of Mastering.
We begin the episode with a conversation about the state of the industry and his view of the way things have progressed to the way they are today; an interesting perspective.
We then get into a discussion on the new apps and programs coming in to the market that “auto-master” songs and albums. Noah explains the difference between those and the real thing, as well as the problems with it; and they aren’t necessarily what you’d think.
This leads us into the actual process of Mastering and what’s involved. We get clarity on the validity of the well-known saying that if a song is mixed properly then it doesn’t need to be mastered.
We also learn what it takes to be good at mastering, how long it takes to master an album, what the most fun genre of music it to master, how and why, sonically, today’s quality of music is going downhill, and much more.
There are some great perspectives and a very different viewpoints I’ve never thought of before.
Enjoy!
