#16: JOEL STEWART Director/Producer of Live-to-Tape Shows at CMT (a.k.a "Supervising Media Gen

The One Sheet career advice with: Joel Stewart of CMT

Although this episode will strike a special chord in Country Music lovers hearts, there is something for everyone on here. Director and Producer, Joel Stewart, specialized in Live-to-Tape (as opposed to Live-To-Air) productions, predominantly for CMT, while also dabbling in some music videos as well.

He has a history with a slew of artists from Teri Clark to Paul Brandt, Jason McCoy, Corb Lund, The Roadhammers, Tim Hicks, Hunter Hayes, to name a few.

There's a lot to listen for in this episode. I made a list of 10 things that stood out to me that you might want to keep an ear open for yourself:

1) He mentions how he came to be in the career position that he's in now, which I'm starting to notice is similar to a lot of other people (I'll discuss that further at the end of the podcast). 2) He tells us why he has a “no yelling on set” rule and how it impacts the overall performance of both artists and crew for the better. 3) We hear about how shows come together from initial concept to your television screen. 4) He gives some advice for bands on tight budgets that want to make a great music video. 5) Although we cover a lot in this podcast, the main purpose is to shed light on the variety of successful career positions available in the industry. Joel shows us that not every job description is black and white, sometimes there isn't a definitive title or description for what you can do! He proves that there's room for creativity and to carve your own path and still be successful at it! 6) Did you ever watch the Dakota Sessions on TV? He was behind those. 7) I learn what a stringer producer is! I don't know about you, but I hadn't ever heard of it before this conversation. 8) He'll tell us how the movie “Fever Pitch” caused him to move half way across the country and make a major career switch. 9) We hear why he loves the old sound of the film rolling, why it was such a great sound for him to hear and why he slightly misses it. 10) Also, I have to mention: this podcast was recorded on the day that Prince passed away. We recorded it and even talk about Prince in the episode (he has a great passport photo!), but only found out after, about the news... so here's also a little shout-out to the legend. RIP Prince.

One last thing before we jump in. You'll hear us mentioning in this episode that I would have a certain person coming on the next episode. Due to scheduling conflicts, we had to reschedule, but, as a little treat, because I'm feeling nice, I'll give you a hint as to who we are having on next week instead. He is a booking agent and VP at an agency, and he is the agent for a certain pop-star who gained his fame from vine. That's all the hints you're getting for now!

Steamwhistle pitched in some of their delicious beer since they love what we have going on here at The One Sheet, so thanks Steamwhistle! With the hot weather finally here, there couldn't be better timing! Looking forward to the summer and even more of these refreshing brews.

Enjoy the episode!
